Intrawave observations of sediment entrainment processes above sand ripples under irregular waves

چکیده
[1] Measurements of intrawave sediment entrainment processes are reported above ripples under irregular waves generated in a large‐scale flume facility. The data consist of substantive observations of small‐scale processes collected at high spatial and temporal resolution under irregular wave forcing, typical of coastal environments. Acoustic measurements were made of water velocities, bed forms, and suspended sediment concentration over plane and rippled beds. During each rippled bed experiment, measurements were taken over the crests of steep sided ripples, above which flow separation was considered likely to occur. Above the ripple crests, a strong intrawave variation in the near‐bed suspended sediment, indicative of vortex formation and shedding, was observed to dominate wave half cycles where the orbital diameter was greater than 1.2 times the ripple wavelength l. The irregular waves were parameterized with a significant wave height Hs and a significant orbital diameter d0s. Thus, during irregular wave conditions and over steep ripples where d0s/l > 1.2, vortex shedding was deemed as the dominant sediment entrainment process. Furthermore, the percentage of wave half cycles where vortex shedding was observed, was found to scale as 26 d0s/l. These results demonstrate, for under irregular waves, the existence of a clear suspended sediment structure consistent with vortex shedding, previously observed under regular waves.

Modeling and measurement of sediment transport by waves in the vortex ripple regime
[1] Above steep, wave-induced sand ripples, which occur extensively in shallow sea areas, the momentum transfer and suspended sediment dynamics are dominated by the formation and shedding at flow reversal of lee wake vortices. Since two-dimensional models of this process are unduly complex for practical application, a simple, onedimensional vertical (1DV), two-layer, model is presented here for...

Introduction: Our lack of understanding of the evolution of seabed roughness (e.g., sand ripples) in sandy coastal regions inhibits our ability to accurately forecast waves and currents and ultimately large-scale morphodynamics. Most wave and circulation models input a constant bottom roughness value (i.e., friction factor) or fixed bed profile that parameterizes the effects of seabed roughness...

The influence of near-bed sorting processes on heavy mineral content in suspension is discussed. Sediment concentrations above a rippled bed of mixed quartz and heavy mineral sand were measured under regular nonbreaking waves in the laboratory. Using the traditional gradient diffusion process, settling velocity would be expected to strongly affect sediment distribution. This was not observed du...

[1] Bed surface coarsening was found to be an important effect for the formation of ripples and the dynamics of the boundary layer above a predominantly silt-sized sediment bed (median particle size equal to 26 mm; 20% fine sand, 70% silt, 10% clay) under oscillatory flow (with orbital velocities of 0.32–0.52 m/s) in a laboratory wave duct. Following bed liquefaction, substantial winnowing of t...
متن کاملTemporal Variation of Suspended Sediment Concentration for Waves over Ripples
Variations of suspended sediment concentration over ripples in regular waves were described using an existing numerical model system. Nielsen’s (1992) empirical formula for sediment entrainment rate from the bed surface was used with an additional scale factor in the model system. The model system was applied to two typical laboratory experimental conditions selected for description of the vari...
